Green Office Practices Lowers Costs for Office Supplies

Employees appreciate it when their employers make an attempt to create a greener environment in the office. A cleaner feeling office boosts morale and promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle that can transcend the work setting and enter into the homes of employees.

There are dozens of ways to go green in the office. Some of the most effective reduce a company's carbon footprint while also minimizing the consumption of office supplies. Overall, green practices decrease energy and supply costs.

Many companies have already made the switch to online file transferring. Free platforms like Google Documents makes it easier to send full documents to coworkers and clients with the click of a button. Using the online software reduces, if not completely eliminates, paper use in the office.

For offices that still need to print contracts and memos on occasion, a cost-effective and green method is to use recycled paper. In today's market you can purchase high quality recycled paper at a comparable price to traditional paper. Additionally, green printing has become more accessible for the average company. Using soy ink to print uses less ink per piece of paper. It spreads easier so there is less of a need for more ink to be pumped onto a page. In some cases there are even eco-friendly fonts that are punctuated with holes in the lettering in order to reduce ink usage.

There will always be a need to have hard copies of documents. An easy and green method to counterbalance printing is to use reusable binder clips to clasp pages together instead of staples. Staples are easily discarded and the one-time-use products serve a minimal purpose in the grand scheme of what the document is doing. Limiting the amount of staples you use and increasing the amount of reusable binder clips will reduce office supply expenses too.

Replacing old light bulbs with LED bulbs is another effective green technique that offices around the country are using. Along with providing a more natural lighting to the office, the LED bulbs last 20 percent longer than traditional incandescent bulbs while using a tenth of the amount of energy. Purchasing longer-lasting light bulbs cuts costs as businesses won't need to restock as much as they had in the past.

It is fairly easy for any business to go a little green in the office. Besides positively impacting the environment, green practices lowers spending on trivial office supplies.
